Event Details

Please note spaces are limited with this intimate workshop.

Carolyn is renowned for her work creating and guiding unusual spirit journeys for women. On her first visit to Brighton she will be leading a celebratory gathering of wild voices and drums to honour earth, ancestral mothers and sisterhood. We will share a simple ritual to mark the Beltane festival, and a journey into women’s sacred drum mysteries that will bring us to the ancient hearth of the grandmother drum. Please bring a drum or rattle if you have one or simply come with your enthusiastic voice – you are also welcome to bring along a piece of nature with which to decorate our Beltane shrine. This workshop will be followed by an evening concert in St Nicholas Church (see above for details).

CAROLYN HILLYER'S
Biography

Carolyn Hillyer is a renowned musician, painter, writer and traditional drum maker who has been performing concerts, exhibiting her images, and leading women’s workshops for many years, both within Britain and internationally. She has recorded nine solo albums and co-written/performed on many others, and has published several books including her new publication Sacred House due out this spring. Her paintings are exhibited as sacred installations, environments that use life-size images, music and ancient totemic hand-crafted items to create unique and powerful spaces for inspiration and contemplation. For the last fifteen years she has been teaching a series of powerful and inspiring workshop journeys for women that weave together song and chant, ritual drum, rites of passage, simple ceremony, ancient mythology and direct interaction with the wild land to create spaces where women can be awakened, inspired and challenged in their explorations of their own sacred landscapes. She makes traditional skin drums and teaches drum making; she is also founder of the women’s festival event Thirteen Moons. Her home and studios are based in an ancient longhouse settlement at the heart of the high open moor lands of south-west England. She has travelled with her work to Australia, the USA, Russia, the Baltic States, Arctic Scandinavia, Japan and throughout the UK and Europe. She is one of the most renowned writers and performers of women’s sacred music within the UK.
